What is Shotokan Karate?
Karate is an ancient Asian System of unarmed combat, developed over 2,000 years ago, as a method of self-defense. At the turn of the century, Master Gichin Funakoshi, an Okinawan school teacher, synthesized the elements of all Karate techniques to produce what is now accepted as modern karate. Funakoshi's main contribution however, was to develop the fighting techniques of karate into a system that builds strong values and good character among its practitioners. His style was called Shotokan.
Shotokan karate is a scientific application of physiology and body dynamics, combining muscle control and balance to produce a powerful system of blocks, strikes, and punches. It is designed for men, women, and children of all ages to improve their mental, physical and even emotional condition.
Shotokan Karate advocates a linear approach, based on the principle that "the shortest distance between two points is a straight line". You can recognize trained Shotokan fighters by their excellent posture, low stance, hip power, and the devastating force they produce.
The program at SMAC Dojo is geared for development of basic Shotokan Karate skills and how it is adapted to self-defense. Special emphasis is placed on physical conditioning, flexibility, and confidence building. Students quickly realize that their physical development, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. More emphasis is therefore necessary to develop strong mental capabilities. Self-defense cannot be accomplished without first attaining a vital sense of self-confidence. The Kata's (form) emphasized in Shotokan Karate uniquely reinforce sound strategy not only in self-defense, but in everyday life as well.
The American JKA of New York, SMAC Dojo encourages competition in sport Karate for the students, especially our youngsters.
